The Power of Love

Written by Annie Curtis

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love never fails.”

1 Cor. 13 (NIV)

In this text, the Apostle Paul is teaching about the supremacy of love. When he says, “Without love, I am nothing,” he is expressing that no matter how gifted, intelligent, spiritual, or generous we may be, if our actions are not rooted in genuine love, they have no true value.

This is a reminder that love is the very essence of who we are called to be. True worth is not found in gifts, words, or deeds alone, but in love that flows through us, reflecting the very heart of God in all we do.

Throughout the Gospel, Scripture tells us that Jesus was moved with love and compassion before miracles took place. This shows us that Jesus’ power flowed from ove and mercy. It was the power of love that came on the scene before miracles actually took place.

Let’s Reflect: What Does “Love” Mean

The highest form of love is agape love. This love is unconditional, loving others and expecting nothing in return. It is not just an emotion, but a way of being and living.

The power of love invites us to ask:
Am I acting out of love, obligation or condition?
Is my heart aligned with God when I serve, speak, or give?

In the Kingdom of God, love is foundational.

The Bible teaches that Jesus’ redemptive love willingly took on the sins of humanity. He could have called legions of angels to come down from Heaven and rescue Him from the cross, but instead, He chose to bear the hurt and the shame of a sinful world that was not his own. This was the power of love.

As we celebrate this sacred season, let us be reminded of the transformative power that lives within us; a love that transcends generations, shaping who we are and who we will become. It is a love that comes only from God in Heaven, for He is love.
